AP Biology Course Description

(AP) Advanced Placement Biology         
Full Year 2 credit                                                                                        Grade: 11-12

Course Description:

This rigorous lab-oriented course is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology course usually taken by Biology majors during their first year. It is intended for well-motivated and high-achieving students who have a strong interest and ability in the Biological sciences, and wish to pursue a related field in post-secondary studies.  Students will prepare diligently for the College Board Exam, with the goal of receiving college credit for a high score exam.  This class will meet for two consecutive periods every other day.  The course aims to provide students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing science of biology.  Major topics introduced in Honors Biology will be covered in much greater detail including molecules and cells, heredity and evolution, and organisms and populations.  In this course, students will study materials contained in the following content standards.   Career Prep A1, 3, B3, C1,3,4,5 D1,2,3.

Criteria for Acceptance in the course:

Completed one high school biology course.
Teacher recommendation.
Completed one chemistry class.

Expectations for Student Performance:

Students are expected to be highly motivated and committed to working at the college level. Students are expected to do regular assignments, works in groups, participation in class discussions and lab activities, and complete a term project.  Students are required to take the Advanced Placement Exam in the spring.
